getting involved

A workshop for high school teachers in Alameda County and West Contra Costa County will be held July 8–10, 2009. Check here in early March for more information.

the curriculum

The curriculum is based on SEPUP’s issue-oriented and inquiry-based approaches to science teaching and learning. In a sequence of six classroom activities, students are introduced to hydrogen and fuel cells in the context of energy for transportation. The activity sequence follows.

  1. 1.Introduction:  Comparing energy sources for transportation

  2. 2.Laboratory: Obtaining hydrogen through electrolysis

  3. 3.Laboratory: Running a hydrogen fuel cell

  4. 4.Modeling: The fuel cell redox reaction

  5. 5.Laboratory: Measuring fuel cell efficiency

  6. 6.Culminating activity: Hydrogen for Buses

This sequence addresses National Science Education Standards and state science standards related to topics such as energy transformations, energy efficiency, chemical reactions, oxidation-reduction, stoichiometry, and societal perspectives on energy issues.
