Science and Sustainability

Science and Sustainability is a full-year, integrated science/environmental science course for the high school. It focuses on the role that science and technology can play in sustainable development. The course is divided into four parts, and each part is designed around one aspect of sustainability: basic needs, food, earth’s resources, and energy. Each part teaches essential science concepts and skills in chemistry, biology, physics, and earth science, such as:

  • Conservation and transfer of energy

  • Molecular structure, chemical reactions, and bonding

  • Nature of motion and forces

  • Cell structure and principles of heredity

  • Ability to design and conduct experiments

Science and Sustainability activities include experiments, simulations, readings, and projects. There is a 500-page, hard-cover student book and a complete Teacher’s Guide. A kit containing the laboratory equipment and supplies required to conduct course activities is also available. The kit provides supplies for use with up to three classes of 32 students each.

The program also includes Material World (Sierra Club Books), a photographic portrait of 39 representative families from around the world. An image of each family and their worldly possessions, along with demographic and other statistical information about each country, provide a global perspective to students as they investigate sustainability issues.
